Research Project A4: Spatiotemporal changes in phytoplankton and macrophyte distribution and community structure along trophic gradients

My project will assess the consequences of gradients in nutrient concentration and of trophic changes for the spatial distribution of phytoplankton functional groups under consideration of lake hydrodynamic. I will conduct simulations with a coupled 3D hydrodynamic and ecological model for Lower Lake Constance to obtain a spatial understanding and identify key processes structuring the phytoplankton distribution, and response patterns during trophic perturbations. The model approaches will be also combined with pigment analysis on spatially resolved sediment cores, water samples as well as with data obtained from seasonal resolved field surveys.
